Books With Universes You Need to Experience

1. The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins (fantasy horror)

5 stars

Such a creative and fun read! This is the book I recommend to people who want to get into reading or have been struggling to finish a book. A rich man adopts all these kids and teaches each one an important skill from war to speaking with animals to language to healing. Creative. Discipline. Madness. Female rage blows out when everything comes crashing down. In the universe of ancient magic.

2. American Gods by Neil Gaiman (fantasy)

5+++++ stars

All the gods of the world. For a god to exist all they need is to be created by thought, but some become forgotten. There’s the Gods of old, your traditional ones in paintings. There’s the new gods such as television and cell phones. A traveling, desperate, journey of cosmic intensity. In the universe of the gods.

A long empty road with a lightning bolt

3. Dark Matter by Blake Crouch (sci-fi)

5++ stars

An abandoned building where top scientists once worked. Multi dimensional. Traveling between realms. An imposter. Science. The imagination of the different worlds combined with the heart racing plot had me floored. In many universes parallel to ours.

Solid red cover with black lettering repeated

4. The Dark Tower series by Stephen King (fantasy sci-fi)

5+++++ stars

Only the greatest series ever written in my humble opinion. In a post-apocalyptic wasteland in another realm. There are billy bumblers and lobstrosities and thinnies. It was a wild ride. A mash up of sci-fi, fantasy, and thriller. The way everything weaves together. Commentary on humanity throughout history and in different worlds. Friendship. Desperation. Adventure. Time travelling and realm hopping between universes.

5. The New Wilderness by Diane Cook (thriller)

5 stars

An experiment brings a small group of people to live in the last stretch of wilderness. Everyone else in the world is in a crowded city where doctors are illegal because the population is too high. A book for those that love the desert and camping. One of the best adventure novels I’ve experienced. In the universe of the wild when there’s none left in the world.

Light blue cover with two pink birds

6. This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno (horror literature)

5 stars

A powerful story of grief. I didn’t read it at the best time personally because of my own grief so it was a little slow going. A fever dream, haunting, escape from one’s own mind. A painful stream of consciousness nightmare. More than grief. Also about personal identity, culture, and migration. In the universe of grief and supernatural.

Black and white visual illusion with small dog

7. The Forgotten Island by David Sodergren (extreme horror)

5 stars

A group of kids vacation to Thailand where they attend a Full Moon Party. They find a boat while in a stupor. In the morning they’re adrift and find themselves on an abandoned island. A creature feature. Extreme. Cult. Giant spiders. Before humanity ancient. Will have your heart thumping. In the universe of what’s been pushed below ground.

Black cover with humanoid figures covered in spider webs

8. The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher (sci-fi horror)

5 stars

In a dusty, curiosity shop she’s living in with her uncle she finds a mysterious hole in the wall. Cryptic words. Other realms. The more you fear them the more they can hear you. This book was a perfect, fun read for me. In the universe of the infinity.

Grey cover with a floating tree above water

9. Lanny by Max Porter (dark literature)

5+ stars

Reads like a poetic fever dream. A young boy who seems to belong with the fairies in the woods is mentored by an old famous artist. Ancient folklore. Beautiful writing. Unique. I cried. Love and acceptance. Where to find solace. In the universe of what has been forgotten.

Green cover with a face made of foliage

10. Winterset Hollow by Jonathon Durham (fairy-tale horror)

5+++ stars

This book was every single thing I loved in a book. It was perfect for me. A guy receives ferry tickets to visit the island of his favorite departed fairy tale writer taking his two friends along. On the island the enormous abandoned mansion sits behind a towering wrought iron fence. They find a way in. Imagine meeting the characters and experiencing your favorite fairy-tale. It would be a dream come true right? Run! Terror. Heart pumping. Creative. Imaginative. Unique. Deeper issues of humanity and what else could have existed alongside us. In the universe of a book.
